everything worth understanding about the Four Pillars, on one page
🌐 Read in: Bahasa Indonesia · 中文
BaZi is a Chinese metaphysical system that converts a birth moment into eight characters: one Heavenly Stem and one Earthly Branch for each of the year, month, day, and hour pillars. Those eight characters are read as a map of personality tendencies, elemental balance, and timing rhythms — not as a fixed prediction of fate. This page is the entry point to every BaZi guide on UnlockMyBazi: start with the fundamentals, then your own Day Master, then the vocabulary you will meet along the way.
If this is your first time reading about BaZi, the single page below is enough to understand the whole framework: what is actually being read, how the four pillars work, and why BaZi is most useful when treated as a self-awareness tool.
Your Day Master is the Heavenly Stem of your day pillar — the “self” at the centre of the whole chart, and the one part of it that never changes in a lifetime. There are ten, each pairing one of the Five Elements with either a Yang polarity that is direct and visible, or a Yin polarity that is subtle and adaptive. Find yours:
a tall tree growing straight toward the light
a vine that bends and still finds its way
the sun: bright, warm, visible from far away
a candle flame: focused, patient, lighting one room
a mountain: stable, load-bearing, slow to change
garden soil: nurturing, adaptive, quietly productive
axe and steel: decisive, direct, cuts cleanly
jewellery and fine blades: precise, refined, detailed
river and sea: moving, wide, carrying much at once
rain and dew: soft, seeping, quietly essential
The fourteen terms that come up most often when reading BaZi, each explained in a sentence or two. You do not need to memorise any of them to use UnlockMyBazi — our readings are written in plain language — but the list helps if you want to read other sources.
The eight characters produced from a birth moment: one Heavenly Stem and one Earthly Branch for each of the year, month, day, and hour pillars.
Another name for BaZi. The four pillars are the year, month, day, and hour of birth; each carries two characters.
The Heavenly Stem of the day pillar. It represents the self in a BaZi chart and is the reference point for the whole reading. There are ten possibilities.
The ten stems: Jia, Yi, Bing, Ding, Wu, Ji, Geng, Xin, Ren, Gui. Each pairs one of the Five Elements with a Yang or Yin polarity.
The twelve branches, corresponding to the twelve animals and to the twelve two-hour blocks of a day.
Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water. They generate and control one another; it is their balance within a chart that is read.
A roughly ten-year period whose stem and branch interact with the natal chart. This is how BaZi describes changing conditions across a lifetime. Also called Da Yun.
The pillar of one specific year, read on top of the natal chart and the active Luck Pillar. Also called Liu Nian.
The twenty-four solar terms that bound a BaZi month. The month pillar changes at a Jieqi, not on the first of a calendar month, and not at Lunar New Year.
The correction from clock time to solar time at the birth longitude. Without it, the hour pillar can land in the wrong two-hour block.
The ten relationships between the Day Master and the other characters in a chart. They name roles such as resource, output, wealth, and authority.
The polarity carried by every stem and branch. Yang tends toward the open and direct, Yin toward the subtle and adaptive. Neither is good or bad.
The Chinese daily almanac. UnlockMyBazi uses it for the daily energy calendar: which days align with starting something, and which suit consolidation.
Two ways stems and branches interact. A clash marks friction or abrupt change; a combination marks attraction and merging. Both are descriptive, not verdicts.
Enter your birth date, time, and place. The full chart, your Day Master, and your Luck Pillars are computed at no cost — using real Jieqi astronomical tables and True Solar Time correction, not approximations.
❖ Start Free BaZi AnalysisBaZi is a Chinese system that converts a birth date, time, and place into eight characters across four pillars. Those eight characters are read as a map of personality tendencies, elemental balance, and timing rhythms. BaZi is computed from birth data rather than invented, and it is not a fixed prediction of fate.
A zodiac horoscope typically uses one data point, the birth month, and produces twelve categories. BaZi uses the exact birth date, time, and city, corrects for True Solar Time, and produces a chart of eight interacting characters. Two people born on the same day four hours apart get different charts.
There is no questionnaire and nothing is self-reported. The chart is computed purely from birth data, so the result does not shift with your mood or self-image on the day you take it.
The hour pillar is one of the four pillars, so an unknown or wrong birth hour removes or corrupts a quarter of the chart. Hour boundaries also shift with longitude once True Solar Time is applied, which is why UnlockMyBazi asks for your birth city and not only your country.
